How can I not give thanks to God? How can I not say Jesus saved me?

My Spiritual Warfare Testimony: How God Met Me in the Darkness

I know today that the Word of God is true. “I found my life within the Word.”

There was a time in my life when I lost my way. I became caught in the snares of temptation, and instead of turning away, I went deeper into an abyss. What began as curiosity eventually became a destructive spiritual battle that affected nearly every part of my life.

For about a year, I felt as though something was pursuing me. Eventually, I felt trapped by my circumstances, the consequences of my choices, and the place I had reached in life.

Looking back now, I see that season differently.

Scripture helped me understand many of the things I experienced, especially the warnings found throughout the Book of Proverbs about temptation, deception, sinful choices, and the destruction that can follow when we turn away from God’s wisdom.

More importantly, that dark season brought me face-to-face with my need for God.

When I Lost Everything

I lost my job.

I lost my home.

I lost my family.

I lost my relationship with my children.

I lost my dignity and reputation.

And I came dangerously close to losing my life.

I still remember my landlord smirking as he told me that I had to leave the house and that he was not changing his mind. At the time, it felt as though everything around me was collapsing at once.

I felt abandoned.

I felt alone.

I felt as though I had nowhere to turn.

And when I look back, I cannot fully comprehend the pain I caused the people I loved during that time.

Eventually, I realized that my greatest battle was not simply what was happening around me. It was also the battle taking place within my own heart.

That became part of my understanding of Spiritual Warfare.

A Dark Night That Changed My Life

While searching my cell phone for a lesson plan during a hot October night, I heard chilling words wanting to claim my life.

From that night forward, something changed in me.

I began desperately searching for truth. I wanted to understand what had happened to my life and why everything had become so confusing and destructive.

During those “dark” nights, I experienced things that I understood through the lens of spiritual warfare. I remember seeing what I believed was a demonic presence and feeling as though I was witnessing something beyond what I could explain through the physical world alone.

Those experiences were terrifying.

I was forced to confront something that I had spent a long time avoiding:

My need for God.

Searching for Truth in the Middle of Confusion

As I searched for answers, I realized how complicated my circumstances had become.

Because of my confusion and some of my own actions, stories were created around me that appeared convincing at the time. Some people believed those stories, while I struggled to understand what was true and what was not.

After struggling on my own for some time, I was eventually offered help that I was eager to accept. However, I soon realized that much of it came with expectations and conditions that were rooted in pride rather than genuine compassion.

That was not the kind of help I needed.

It was not the kind of help I believe comes from God.

At that point in my life, I felt like nobody. I felt discarded.

It seemed as though the people around me had moved on while I was left to deal with the surrounding destruction.

But beneath all of that pain was something I could not ignore: I had also hurt people I loved.

I felt as though I was living someone else’s life rather than my own.

Understanding Spiritual Warfare

As I continued searching for answers, I began recognizing patterns of deception, manipulation, adultery, temptation, and a destructive desire to end my life.

This is when I began to understand that Spiritual Warfare can affect the way we think, the choices we make, and the battles we face in our lives.

The Bible teaches that our ultimate struggle is not simply against other people. Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

That verse changed the way I looked at the people who had hurt me.

But it also changed the way I looked at myself.

I could have spent the rest of my life blaming everyone else for what happened. Instead, God began teaching me to examine my own heart.

He showed me where I had failed.

He showed me the choices I had made.

He showed me the sins I had committed.

He showed me how I had hurt the people I loved.

And He showed me that I had to take responsibility for those things.

That realization was painful, but it was also necessary.

When God Met Me in the Darkness

I remember another moment in my search for truth when I encountered things I never expected—words and experiences that deeply frightened me.

One phrase I heard that will forever be engraved in my mind is:

“The police will kill him.”

At the time, it made no sense to me.

But that moment became part of a much greater turning point in my life.

In the middle of all the confusion and turmoil, I believe God met me.

For the first time, I began to let Him in.

I dropped to my knees and begged God for help.

I did not have the answers.

I did not have the strength.

I did not know how to repair everything I had destroyed.

All I knew was that I needed God.

I began to understand a truth that has stayed with me ever since:

“What the devil meant for evil, God can use for good”

My circumstances did not suddenly become easy. My problems did not disappear overnight.

But something inside me began to change.

God began teaching me through His Word, one step at a time.

What Proverbs Taught Me About Temptation

The Book of Proverbs became especially meaningful to me.

Proverbs repeatedly contrasts wisdom with foolishness, obedience with rebellion, and temptation with consequences. Its warnings about sexual immorality and adultery became painfully personal.

There were things I once read as simple warnings that I later came to understand through experience.

I learned that temptation rarely announces where it is taking you.

It often begins with one compromise.

Then another.

Then another.

Before long, you can find yourself somewhere you never intended to be.

That is one reason the wisdom found throughout Proverbs—and especially the message of Proverbs 31—has become so important to me.

“God’s wisdom is not given to condemn us. It is given to protect us”

His Word warns us, because He wants us to recognize the path of destruction before we reach the end of life.

God’s wisdom calls us back before destruction becomes our destination.

God’s Grace in the Darkness

There were many nights filled with hurt, sorrow, confusion, and regret.

But God used those nights to change me.

Through the pain, I began to understand the value of life in a way I never had before.

I began to understand more deeply why Jesus Christ came into this world and gave His life for us.

Without the love and grace of God, I would not be writing these words today.

Jesus taught me that grace is not permission to continue living in sin.

Grace is what meets us when we finally recognize how far we have fallen and turn back toward God.

I had fallen.

But God was still calling me home.

The Enemy Does Not Get the Final Word

My experience taught me not to underestimate temptation, sin, deception, or what I understand as the reality of Spiritual Warfare.

But it also taught me something greater:

“The enemy does not get the final word”

There were times when I felt as though everything had been taken from me.

There were times when I felt forgotten.

There were times when I believed my life was over.

But God was still there.

The physical world can be confusing. People can hurt one another. We can make terrible decisions. Evil can appear to prosper for a season.

But Scripture reminds us that God sees what we cannot see.

Nothing escapes Him.

We may believe we are getting away with something, but ultimately, no one escapes God’s judgment.

Yet judgment is not the only message of Scripture.

There is mercy.

There is forgiveness.

There is redemption.

There is Jesus.

Finding Strength in Jesus Christ

God showed me that through Him—and through His Son, Jesus Christ—I could become strong again.

Not strong because I had all the answers.

Not strong because I had never failed.

But strong because I finally understood that my strength had to come from Him.

I had spent so much time trying to understand the darkness that I almost forgot to look toward the Light.

Jesus Christ became that Light for me.

The Word of God became my foundation.

Prayer became my refuge.

Repentance became part of my journey.

And forgiveness became something I had to learn—not only to receive from God, but to give to others. “70 times 70 times.”

We Are All Forgiven

Today, I can look back at that painful chapter of my life differently.

I do not pretend it did not happen.

I do not pretend my choices did not have consequences.

And I do not pretend I did not hurt people.

But I also refuse to remain a prisoner of my past.

God’s grace is greater than my failure.

His mercy is greater than my shame.

His love is greater than the darkness I experienced.

I choose to forgive.

I choose to let go.

I choose to surrender that chapter of my life to Christ and no longer allow its circumstances to have a grip on me.

We are all forgiven.

Those spirits no longer have a grip on me.

My Testimony of Spiritual Warfare

My story is not a story about how perfect I became.

It is a story about how far I fell—and how God continued to call me back.

It is a story about temptation, sin, consequences, spiritual warfare, repentance, forgiveness, and grace.

Most importantly, it is a story about Jesus Christ.

If you are walking through your own darkness right now, please don’t believe that your story is finished.

Turn back to God.

Open His Word.

Pray.

Seek wise and trustworthy help.

Take responsibility for your choices.

And don’t be afraid to admit that you need Jesus.

I learned the hard way that shame, confusion, temptation, and destructive choices can keep a person trapped in darkness.

But God calls us toward truth, repentance, freedom, and life.

I will continue to pray for everyone I encounter on this journey.

May God give us wisdom to recognize temptation, courage to turn away from sin, humility to accept responsibility, and faith to trust Him when we cannot understand what is happening.

Above everything else, remember this:

The darkness does not have the final word.

Jesus does.

All in Jesus’ Name.

Amen.
