Love, Life, and The Pursuit of Wisdom

Proverbs 4:5 – Get Wisdom and Understanding

“Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.” — Proverbs 4:5 NKJV.

There are many things we pursue in life—success, financial security, relationships, knowledge, and personal growth. But the Bible reminds us that there is something far more valuable we should pursue: wisdom and understanding.

Proverbs 4:5 gives us a direct command: “Get wisdom! Get understanding!” These words are more than good advice. They are an invitation to seek God’s wisdom and allow His truth to guide the way we live.

Why Is Wisdom So Important?

Wisdom is more than simply having knowledge. We can know many things and still make poor decisions. Biblical wisdom teaches us how to apply what we know so we can honor God and benefit our lives and the people around us.

Proverbs 4:7 reinforces this message:

“Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”

This verse shows us how valuable wisdom truly is. We should not simply seek information—we should seek understanding and discernment.

Godly wisdom can help us make better decisions, recognize what is right, avoid destructive paths, and remain focused when life becomes difficult.

How Do We Gain Wisdom and Understanding?

1. Seek God Through His Word

One of the greatest ways to grow in wisdom is through Scripture. The Bible provides instruction, correction, encouragement, and guidance for everyday life.

As we spend time reading God’s Word, we begin to see life from His perspective rather than relying entirely on our own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than depending solely on ourselves.

2. Learn From Your Experiences

Life can teach us valuable lessons when we are willing to stop and reflect.

Our mistakes, disappointments, successes, and challenges can all provide opportunities to grow. Instead of simply asking, “Why did this happen?” we can also ask, “What can God teach me through this experience?”

Wisdom often develops when we allow difficult experiences to shape us rather than allowing them to discourage us.

3. Listen to Wise Counsel

We don’t have to figure everything out on our own. Proverbs repeatedly encourages us to value wise counsel.

There is wisdom in surrounding ourselves with people who are willing to tell us the truth, encourage us, and point us in the right direction.

Sometimes, receiving wisdom means being humble enough to listen.

4. Practice Discernment

Understanding helps us recognize that not everything we hear, see, or believe is necessarily true or beneficial.

We need discernment to evaluate our decisions, relationships, priorities, and influences. Instead of following every popular opinion, we can pause, pray, study God’s Word, and seek His direction.

5. Allow Trials to Grow You

Some of life’s greatest lessons come through difficult seasons.

Challenges can develop patience, endurance, humility, and spiritual maturity. While we may not always understand why we are going through something, God can use those experiences to deepen our faith and increase our wisdom.

Don’t Forget God’s Wisdom

The second part of Proverbs 4:5 is just as important as the command to get wisdom:

“Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.”

It is possible to gain knowledge and still forget what God has taught us. Life gets busy. Distractions come. Circumstances change. Sometimes we are tempted to rely on our own understanding instead of trusting God’s direction.

That’s why we must continually return to God’s Word.

Proverbs 4:5 is a reminder that wisdom should be a lifelong pursuit. We should seek understanding, listen to God’s instruction, practice discernment, and remain faithful to His truth.

The more we pursue God, the more we begin to understand that true wisdom isn’t simply about knowing more. It is about living differently because of what God has taught us.

So today, let us take the words of Proverbs 4:5 to heart:

Get wisdom. Get understanding. Don’t forget God’s Word, and don’t turn away from His instruction.

When we make godly wisdom a priority, we are better prepared to navigate life’s challenges, make wise decisions, and walk confidently in the purpose God has for our lives.
