The Importance Of Helping The Afflicted With Love In Life
Why Helping the Afflicted Matters According to Proverbs 22:22-23
“Do not rob the poor because he is poor, nor oppress the afflicted at the gate; for the Lord will plead their cause, and plunder the soul of those who plunder them.”
— Proverbs 22:22-23 NKJV
The Bible makes God’s heart for the poor, vulnerable, and afflicted very clear. Proverbs 22:22-23 reminds us that God sees those who are struggling and calls His people to treat them with compassion, dignity, and justice.
We are not called to take advantage of someone simply because they are in a difficult position. Instead, we should look for opportunities to help, encourage, and stand beside those who are hurting.
When we help the afflicted, we are doing more than performing a good deed. We are reflecting God’s heart for mercy, justice, and compassion.
Who Are the Afflicted Today?
The word afflicted can describe people experiencing hardship, suffering, or distress. While circumstances may look different today, many people around us are carrying burdens that we cannot always see.
The afflicted may include:
-
Families struggling with poverty or food insecurity
-
People living with illness or disability
-
Individuals experiencing grief, loneliness, or hardship
-
Those facing difficult financial or personal circumstances
-
People who feel forgotten, overlooked, or without support
Sometimes people do not need someone to fix everything. They “simply” need someone willing to notice, listen, pray, and offer a helping hand.
As Christians, we should not become so busy with our own lives that we overlook the needs of others.
How Helping Others Reflects God’s Love
Helping the afflicted can have an impact that goes far beyond meeting a physical need.
It can restore hope. A simple act of kindness can remind someone that they are not forgotten.
It can restore dignity. Providing food, clothing, encouragement, or practical assistance communicates that every person has value.
It can create lasting change. Mentoring, teaching, volunteering, and helping someone find resources can provide support beyond a single moment of need.
It reflects biblical justice. Proverbs 22:23 reminds us that God Himself sees how the vulnerable are treated and promises to plead their cause.
Practical Ways to Help the Afflicted
You don’t have to be wealthy or have unlimited time to make a difference. Start with what God has already placed in your hands.
-
Give what you can. Support a person, a family, church ministry, or trustworthy organization serving those in need.
-
Volunteer your time. Help at a food pantry, shelter, or community outreach.
-
Listen with compassion. Sometimes your willingness to listen is one of the greatest gifts you can offer.
-
Pray for those who are hurting. Ask God to show you how you can become part of the answer to that prayer.
-
Encourage someone. A kind word can bring hope to someone walking through a difficult season.
A Prayer for a Compassionate Heart
Lord, open my eyes to see those who are hurting around me. Give me a heart that is willing to help, hands that are ready to serve, and the courage to stand for what is right. Forgive me when I overlook the needs of others. Help me reflect Your love, mercy, and compassion every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
A Daily Thought
Helping the afflicted is an opportunity to demonstrate God’s love through our actions. We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can always choose compassion.
Today, ask God to show you one person who needs encouragement, assistance, or simply someone willing to care. Sometimes a small act of love can become a powerful reminder that God has not forgotten them.
