What Changes When You Follow Jesus Christ?
What Changes When You Decide to Follow Jesus Christ?
Choosing to follow Jesus Christ is more than adopting a new belief system or identifying as a Christian. Following Jesus is a life-changing decision that begins a lifelong process of spiritual transformation.
When we surrender our lives to Christ, He begins changing the way we think, what we value, how we treat others, and how we live each day. We are called to become more like Him and allow His teachings to guide our lives.
But what exactly should change when we decide to follow Jesus?
1. Our Priorities Change
One of the first changes we experience when following Jesus is a change in our priorities.
Before following Christ, it can be easy to make money, success, possessions, relationships, entertainment, or personal desires the center of our lives. Jesus calls us to seek something greater.
Our priorities should begin to center around God, spiritual growth, obedience, serving others, and seeking God’s will.
This does not mean that our responsibilities disappear. Instead, we begin looking at our careers, families, finances, and goals from a different perspective.
Rather than asking only, “What do I want?” we begin asking, “What does God want me to do?”
2. Our Attitudes Change
Following Jesus also requires a transformation of our attitudes.
Jesus teaches us to move away from pride, selfishness, bitterness, and judgment and toward humility, compassion, patience, forgiveness, and love.
This can be challenging because our natural reaction is not always Christlike. We may want to respond to anger with anger or hold onto resentment when someone hurts us.
Following Jesus means learning to respond differently.
We begin asking God to help us forgive, show grace, control our words, and treat others with compassion—even when it is difficult.
3. Our Actions Change
Faith in Jesus should influence the way we live.
Following Christ means that our actions should increasingly reflect His teachings. We are called to pursue honesty, integrity, righteousness, self-control, and obedience to God’s Word.
This does not mean Christians become perfect overnight. Following Jesus is a lifelong process of spiritual growth.
We will make mistakes, but we should also be willing to recognize our mistakes, repent, receive God’s forgiveness, and continue growing.
Our behavior should become evidence that our relationship with Christ is changing us from the inside out.
4. Our Relationships Change
Jesus also changes the way we approach our relationships.
He calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, to forgive others, pursue peace, and seek reconciliation when possible.
Following Jesus does not mean every relationship will suddenly become easy. However, our approach to those relationships should change.
Instead of seeking revenge, we seek forgiveness.
Instead of holding onto hatred, we pursue love.
Instead of constantly trying to prove ourselves right, we learn the value of humility and peace.
Christlike love should influence the way we treat our family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and even those with whom we disagree.
5. Our Perspective on Life Changes
Perhaps one of the greatest changes that occurs when we follow Jesus is our perspective.
The things that once seemed most important can begin to look different. Temporary success, possessions, popularity, and worldly achievements no longer have the same importance as they once did.
Jesus teaches us to look beyond this temporary life and recognize the eternal significance of our choices.
We begin to ask deeper questions:
Am I living according to God’s purpose?
Am I growing closer to Christ?
Am I helping others see God’s love?
Am I storing up what has eternal value?
Our perspective shifts from simply living for ourselves to living for God’s kingdom and His purposes.
Following Jesus Is a Lifelong Transformation
Following Jesus Christ is not about becoming perfect. It is about allowing God to transform us one day at a time.
Our priorities, attitudes, actions, relationships, and perspective should increasingly reflect the character of Christ.
There may be times when we struggle, stumble, or fall short. But spiritual growth means continuing to seek God, to learn from His Word, repent when necessary, and allow Him to shape our lives.
The decision to follow Jesus is the beginning of a lifelong journey.
As we grow in our relationship with Him, we should become more loving, more humble, more forgiving, more obedient, and more focused on God’s will.
This Was Hard At First
If you have decided to follow Jesus, don’t be discouraged when you see areas of your life that still need to change. Transformation takes time.
The important thing is to keep walking with Christ and allow Him to work within you.
Following Jesus changes more than what we believe. It changes who we are becoming.
When Christ is at the center of our lives, our priorities will begin to change, our attitudes will become more Christlike, our actions reflect our faith, our relationships transform, and our perspectives will focus on eternal things.
That is the beautiful journey of following Jesus: becoming more like Christ while growing closer to Him each day.
