Finding Strength in God During Difficult Times

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. We may face uncertainty, opposition, disappointment, fear, and circumstances we cannot control. At times, it may even seem as though the people and institutions around us are moving farther away from the truth of God’s Word.

But as followers of Jesus Christ, our hope does not depend on the condition of the world around us.

Our hope is in God.

When darkness seems to be growing, we must remember that Jesus Christ is still the Light of the world, and darkness cannot overcome Him.

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’”
John 8:12 NKJV

So how do we remain strong when life becomes difficult?

We turn our attention away from fear and back toward the One who gives us strength.

1. Find Your Strength in God

When challenges come, our first response may be to depend on our own understanding or abilities. But Scripture teaches us that our true strength comes from God.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1 NKJV

There will be situations we cannot fix and circumstances we cannot control. But we can always control where we turn for help.

Prayer, God’s Word, and quiet time with the Lord remind us that we are not facing our struggles alone.

Instead of asking, “How can I handle all of this?” we can pray:

“Lord, give me the strength and wisdom to walk through this with You.”

God may not immediately remove every difficulty, but He can give us the strength to endure it.

2. Stay Close to God’s Word

When the world becomes confusing, we need something greater than opinions to guide us.

We need truth.

Jesus prayed to the Father:

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
John 17:17 NKJV

God’s Word helps us distinguish truth from deception, wisdom from foolishness, and God’s ways from the ways of the world.

The more time we spend in Scripture, the more our thoughts can become aligned with God’s truth.

When fear says, “There is no hope,” God’s Word reminds us that He is faithful.

When the world says, “Follow your own way,” God’s Word tells us to trust the Lord.

When circumstances say, “Give up,” God’s promises remind us to keep walking by faith.

3. Surround Yourself With Other Believers

We were never meant to walk through the Christian life alone.

During difficult seasons, surrounding ourselves with other believers can provide encouragement, prayer, wisdom, and accountability.

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.”
Hebrews 10:24 NKJV

Christian fellowship helps strengthen us when our faith is tested.

Seek relationships with people who encourage you to draw closer to Christ—not people who “simply” tell you what you want to hear.

Sometimes God strengthens us through His Word. Other times, He uses another believer to remind us of the truth we already know but desperately need to hear again.

4. Let Difficult Times Strengthen Your Faith

Challenges do not have to destroy our faith. God can use them to strengthen it.

Some of our greatest spiritual growth can happen during seasons we would never have chosen for ourselves.

Difficult circumstances can teach us patience, perseverance, humility, compassion, and dependence upon God.

James wrote:

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
James 1:2–3 NKJV

This does not mean suffering is easy or that we should pretend difficulties do not hurt.

It means our struggles do not have to be wasted.

God can use what we go through to shape our character and deepen our relationship with Him.

Instead of only asking, “Lord, why am I going through this?” we can also ask:

“Lord, what are You teaching me through this?”

5. Be a Light in a Dark World

When the world seems dark, Christians should not respond by becoming consumed with anger, fear, or hopelessness.

We are called to shine.

Jesus said:

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14 NKJV

Being a light means allowing Christ to be seen through the way we live.

Show kindness when others choose hostility.

Choose forgiveness when bitterness would be easier.

Speak truth without abandoning love.

Help someone who is struggling.

Pray for those who oppose you.

Serve without demanding recognition.

Our goal is not simply to tell people about the Light. Our lives should help point them toward Him.

6. Trust God When the World Seems Out of Control

One of the hardest lessons of faith is accepting that we cannot control everything happening around us.

We cannot control every decision others make. We cannot control every circumstance, every leader, or every event taking place in the world.

But God remains sovereign.

Scripture reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV

Our responsibility is not to carry the weight of the entire world on our shoulders.

Our responsibility is to remain faithful to God.

When circumstances become uncertain, we can still pray.

We can still obey.

We can still love.

We can still forgive.

We can still serve.

And we can still trust God.

7. Depend on the Holy Spirit

We cannot live the Christian life through human strength alone.

Jesus promised His followers the Holy Spirit to guide, teach, comfort, and strengthen them.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things.”
John 14:26 NKJV

When we remain close to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, He begins producing something the world cannot manufacture on its own:

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

These are the qualities that should become increasingly visible in our lives—even when circumstances around us are difficult.

Nothing Can Replace Jesus Christ

There are many ways people seek peace in difficult times. Some look to success, possessions, politics, entertainment, relationships, or their own abilities.

But lasting hope cannot be found in any of these things.

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6 NKJV

Our strength is not ultimately found within ourselves.

Our strength is found in Jesus Christ.

Through Him, we can find courage when we are afraid, peace when life becomes uncertain, hope when circumstances appear hopeless, and love when the world encourages division.

Most importantly, through Christ we receive something this world could never give us:

eternal life.

Remember to Give Thanks to God

Even during difficult seasons, we should remember everything God has already done for us.

Gratitude redirects our attention from what we fear toward the One we trust.

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV

Thank God for His mercy.

Thank Him for His patience.

Thank Him for His Word.

Thank Him for the Holy Spirit.

Thank Him for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

And thank Him that no matter what happens around us, He remains faithful.

A Final Reflection: Where Does Your Strength Come From?

The world around us will continue to change. Leaders will change. Circumstances will change. Difficulties will come and go.

But Jesus Christ does not change.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

So when darkness seems overwhelming, do not allow fear to determine your direction.

Return to God’s Word.

Pray.

Stay close to Jesus.

Listen to the Holy Spirit.

Encourage others.

Give thanks.

And continue walking in faith.

We do not overcome darkness by becoming consumed with darkness.

We overcome darkness by walking with the Light of the world—Jesus Christ.
