The Importance of God’s Word in Our Lives

Matthew 4:4: Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone

Matthew 4:4 (New King James Version) says:

“But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”’”

This powerful verse reveals an essential truth about the Christian life: we need more than physical food to truly live. We also need the Word of God to nourish our hearts, minds, and spirits.

When Jesus spoke these words, He reminded us that spiritual nourishment is just as important as physical nourishment. Food sustains our bodies, but God’s Word gives us wisdom, strength, guidance, hope, and encouragement for our daily lives.

What Does Matthew 4:4 Mean?

The meaning of Matthew 4:4 becomes especially clear when we consider the context. Jesus spoke these words while being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. Satan tempted Him to turn stones into bread, but Jesus responded by quoting Scripture.

Jesus demonstrated that satisfying a physical need should never take priority over obedience to God. “Man shall not live by bread alone” does not mean that physical food is unimportant. Rather, it teaches us that human beings have spiritual needs that physical things cannot satisfy.

Our bodies need food, but our souls need God.

The Word of God Is Our Spiritual Nourishment

The Bible is much more than a collection of stories, historical accounts, or moral lessons. The Word of God provides spiritual nourishment that can transform the way we think, live, and respond to the world around us.

When we regularly read and meditate on Scripture, we give ourselves an opportunity to hear God’s truth and apply it to our lives. His Word can:

  • Give us wisdom when we need direction

  • Provide strength when we feel weak

  • Bring comfort during difficult seasons

  • Correct us when we are heading in the wrong direction

  • Encourage us when we feel discouraged

  • Help us resist temptation

  • Strengthen our faith

  • Remind us of God’s promises and faithfulness

Just as we need regular physical nourishment to maintain our bodies, we need regular spiritual nourishment to strengthen our relationship with God.

God’s Word Gives Us Guidance and Wisdom

Life often presents difficult decisions and unexpected challenges. We may not always know which direction to take or how to respond to a difficult situation.

The Bible provides truth, wisdom, and guidance that can help us navigate life according to God’s will. Scripture teaches us how to love others, make wise choices, overcome temptation, develop godly character, and remain faithful during trials.

When we allow God’s Word to shape our thoughts and actions, we become better equipped to recognize what is right and live according to His purposes.

The Bible Brings Hope and Encouragement

There are times when we all experience uncertainty, disappointment, fear, or discouragement. During these seasons, the Word of God can remind us that we are not alone.

Scripture is filled with promises of God’s faithfulness, love, mercy, and presence. Reading the Bible can redirect our attention from our circumstances to the character of God.

When our faith feels weak, God’s Word can strengthen us. When we are discouraged, Scripture can give us hope. When we are uncertain about the future, God’s promises can remind us that He remains faithful.

Living by Every Word That Comes From God

Matthew 4:4 challenges us to examine what we are using to satisfy our deepest needs.

It is easy to focus our attention on material possessions, success, entertainment, relationships, or other temporary things. Yet none of these can replace our need for God.

Jesus teaches us that true life depends on more than physical bread. We need the Word of God.

This means that reading the Bible should not simply be viewed as a religious obligation. Studying Scripture is an opportunity to grow closer to God, understand His will, strengthen our faith, and allow His truth to transform our lives.

Make God’s Word a Daily Priority

If we want to grow spiritually, we should make time for God’s Word every day. Even a few minutes spent reading, praying, and meditating on Scripture can help us develop a deeper relationship with Him.

Consider asking yourself:

  • What is God teaching me through this passage?

  • How can I apply this Scripture to my life?

  • Is there an attitude or action I need to change?

  • What does this passage reveal about God?

  • How can I trust God more because of what I have read?

The goal is not simply to read more verses. The goal is to know God, understand His truth, and allow His Word to shape our lives.

Conclusion: Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone

Matthew 4:4 reminds us that physical nourishment alone is not enough. We were created with a spiritual need that only God can truly satisfy.

Bread sustains the body, but the Word of God nourishes the soul. Scripture gives us wisdom, guidance, comfort, strength, hope, and truth. When we consistently read and meditate on God’s Word, we become better equipped to face temptation, overcome challenges, make wise decisions, and live according to His will.

Let us take Jesus’ words seriously and seek to live “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” May the Bible become more than something we read—it can become a source of daily spiritual nourishment and a foundation for how we live our lives.
